Layout of Poetics & Principles of Design

The main page of Poetics is separated into three main categories. Each category is designed with the principle of hierarchy in mind. Each category is labeled by large text displayed at the top and left. Each sub-category card continues to demonstrate hierarchy by using bold text for the sub-category and smaller normal text for the descriptions. The sub-category cards are slightly emphasized via contrast implemented with drop shadows and inner shadows.

The pattern of hierarchy, repetition, and white space continues with each category and card on the main page, and throughout the app. This creates unity among and between pages. The intent is to create a smooth and predictable rhythm that users can flow with as they use the app.

The Poet of the Day frame is a small display of variety, unity, balance, and hierarchy.

Color Theory of Poetics

The colors of Poetics are inspired by colors you might find on the cover of a poetry book or inside the local café. My goal is to provoke a sense of calmness and thoughtfulness with this palette.

Color contrast is used throughout the app between the text, buttons, and cards. For example, on the "prompt" page I use colors to contrast between the card and two buttons. Doing so guides the user to head over to the journal to start writing.
